Anna Rosa Cigar
524 Main St. Seneca, KS
Another large mural that can be seen is an advertisement for a cigar brand, Anna Rosa Cigar. I have discovered photographs of the original painting, and can identify the building as Floyd & Jack Meats & Grocery. According to the Nemaha County Historical Society, Anna Rosa Cigars were made in Marysville, Kansas, which is 37 miles directly west of Seneca on Highway 36. The remnants of this mural are unrecognizable, and though I haven’t found other photographs, I believe multiple different layers of murals had been painted on the building. In my interview with Dick Miller, He mentioned that his father had painted a Dr. Pepper advertisement on the same side of the building, though I have been unable to locate any images of it. Recently, this building has been in the local news, as it has been sitting vacant for some time and is starting to become a potential hazard to the surrounding buildings. According to the Courier-Tribune in Seneca, the city council members noted concerns about safety and appearance, as well as the aspect of the two-story building which was built in 1900. It has housed a grocery with rear warehouse in 1911 and 1924 with a lodge hall on the second floor in 1917. The business was listed as Floyd & Jack’s Grocery in 1932. Due to its historical impact, I hope the city can see the value of the building and work to restore and repair it, instead of demolishing it.
