Selz Royal Blue Shoe
26 N 5th St. Seneca, KS.
Another prominent and recognizable mural that can be seen today is for Selz Royal Blue Shoe, which was selling for $3.50 at the time. According to the photos I have found, the building has been a department store under Wempe & Buening, then Thompson & Wempe, and finally Wempe & Huerter. Today it is owned by Sharon Deters and is the home of her business, Little Steps Dance and Gymnastics Studio. There are many of details of the mural visible today, especially in the shoe, and I assume that it has been repainted in the course of it’s life. In the photographs I have seen, the name of the owner changes, but the advertisement stayed the same. Throughout my research I have found images of similar mural ads for this specific shoe in different towns across the United States, which tells me it was a successful brand of shoe.
